| About | Greetings from BITAN. BITAN is an NGO working in Municipality areas (west Bengal, India) focusing on development & empowerment of young peoples particularly from the backward sections of the society following Life Cycle Approach. The scenario of the Municipality revealed that the rate of drop out of the adolescent girls from schools is much higher than that of boys. It was found that the key reasons are lack of money to continue their education after class VII resulting early marriage for the girls below 18 years in order to decrease the expenditure of the family. All the reasons indicate the fact that girls are considered as liabilities, not as an asset. Their potentialities remain unutilized leading to a loss of productivity of the nation. With this backdrop, BITAN, an NGO, has undertaken "Swajan Prakalpa"-a project in the Budge Budge / New Barrack pore Municipality areas which will primarily support the adolescent girls. The objectives of the project are as follows: To facilitate the adolescent girls in generating income, mainly to prevent their drop out ratio from the mainstream education process To facilitate the girls, who have already been dropped out from formal schools, to continue their studies in formal schools or from open schools through income generation to support their education. To support in the overall development of these adolescent girls through providing them services related to education, health and personality development. The creative designs and technical guidance are provided to these girls so that they can create innovative products by themselves by recycling the waste materials, dry flowers and leafs (greetings card, corporate stationaries, ornament box etc) . The qualities of the products are excellent and the looks are trendy enough to compete in the market. Facilitation is being done to enhance the self-respects, self-confidence, and professionalism of these girls and to reach their goals.
