Stevia seeds, planting material and tissue culture planting material is available with us. Stevia (stevia rebaudiana) is a small bush native to Paraguay. The leaves of this plant contain carbohydrate-based compounds 200-300 times sweeter than sugar. These compounds, steviosides, can be extracted and used as alternative sweeteners to sugars. Traditionally, stevia leaves have been used for hundreds of years in Paraguay and Brazil to sweeten local teas, medicines and as a "sweet treat. " Stevosides contain zero calories and can be used as a sugar substitute in cooking and baking. They are especially beneficial to diabetics and those wishing to reduce sugar intake for health reasons. Its primary use is as a sweetener to enhance the palatability of food and drinks. Unlike aspartame, Stevia sweeteners are heat stable to 200 degrees centigrade, are acid stable and do not ferment, making them suitable for use in a wide range of products. Stevia is a naturally sweet herbal plant, rebiana, from the Chrysanthemum family, closely related to Chamomile plant. Its extracts or 'juice' are 300times sweeter than sugar of an equivalent weight and it contains zero calories. |
