About This company was founded by my father, Charlie T. Walker, in 1938 when he discovered the need for copper in decorative plating for the automobile industry in Detroit, Michigan.

One of our interesting bits of history is the company name. At the beginning, my father purchased a design for a Vertical Milling Machine with a universal head. This was a small bench top machine and many were sold to Great Britain during WWII. Thus the name Uni-from Universal

The Vertical Milling Machine

And Vertical for Vertical Mill. At the time the anticipated success was so great, that it was decided that the company should be called Univertical Foundry and Machine Co.

Early on, Univertical produced many products while evolving. They include rotating bands used on heavy munitions and artillery shells, forgings for aircraft bomb attachments, brass plumbing fittings, copper hammers, the first nickel balls and nickel bars for plating. Univertical was a strategic supplier to the Department of Defense during WWII and remains so today.

Our company is old and the culture reflects the values set forth from an era gone by. We value character in people, fair business practices and dedication to providing materials that are the best that we know how to make. We continually work on improving products and evolving them with new technology and experienced gained. We have brought many innovations to the industries we serve including: the first ball shaped anode, the first copper anode containing phosphorus, the first nickel ball anode, the titanium basket, the graphite basket, grain structure refinement for high quality anodes. We have also made many strides in the chemical industry such as, the first dustless cyanides, the first liquid cyanides for ergonomic use, processes for ultra pure chemicals of copper and nickel yielding the highest commercially pure salts available.

We choose not to be the low cost producer! Cost driven manufacturing leads to compromises in raw material, manufacturing processes, R& D and services. Alternatively, we believe that on a total value basis, our materials and services deliver customers products that actually cost the minimum while yielding the ultimate results. W. E. Demming taught us that best quality yields lowest cost. It is difficult for customers to track the intangibles: consistent supply chain, consistent quality, technical assistance, lower rejects. These are costs that are not tracked and when the decision comes down to a price, all of these things are left unprotected. In 67 years, we have seen low cost producers come and go. They have won battles from us; however, we are still here, growing and investing and not compromising our culture for a short term gain.

We are a profit driven company and I am proud to say that. Without profit, we cannot reinvest in people, capitol equipment, R& D and infrastructure for the future. If we do not do these things, we are not serving our customers and their future needs. We have chosen to invest in China to serve our customers who have left North America and many Asian customers we have been serving for over 30 years.

Finally, we have a team of dedicated people that believe in our culture. Our team has pride in their work and believes in ethical practices. We recognize that the world is always changing and we must adapt and continually reinvent ourselves. Our UniVertical milling machine came and went and we adapted. The same is true for nickel anodes, copper hammers, brass forgings and many other products. We continue to evolve and adapt. Today we serve many industries with diverse products and services. We stand ready to work for you the customer.
