Our trip to the dicovery of valuable stones, marms and piedmontese granite, starts in one of the most striking corners of Italy and of the world: the lake Maggiore, which is interesting also in winter because of the charm of the mountains and the castles that dominate from above, sorrounded by the moody colour of the banks and the water. The Valley of Ossola is rich of springs and sites moulded by the water, but also of mineral processing and of headstone manufacturing that have always playied an essencial role in the economical history of the Verbano-Cusi-Ossola area. It is enough to observe that expecially in the small towns of the Alta Valley, everything is made of stone, the walls of the houses, roofs and streets. Jewellery of romanic art, as this little church, are today almost undamaged, thanks to the local stone's materials as serizzi and beole that were used to built them. In the Ossola area there are several caves made of ornamental stones. The most ancient cave is the pink marble cave of Candoglia in Mergozzo, as the monument that lies at the foot of the mountain reminds us. Since 1387, the pink marble has been drawn from this mountain also for the building construction of the Cathedral Dome of Milan.
